A Maine stay for generations

The Union Bluff Hotel has been keeping a watchful eye over the shores of Short Sands Beach since 1868. Back then, guests arrived by horse drawn carriage and steam train with their trunks packed for a month long stay. The feeling of the Bluff's old-world charm remains just as strong today. Learn more about our rich history, fantastic lodging and delicious food.

A Little Bit of History...

The recent storm surge uncovered a bit of history at Short Sands Beach.  This 51-foot long ship is believed to be a late colonial or early post-colonial single-masted sloop dating between 1750-1850. Such vessels were common along Maine's coast and were used for fishing cod and hauling cargo.  This shipwreck is among 1595 known shipwrecks along Maine's coast.  The last time this ship appeared in the sand was after the Patriot's Day storm in 2007.
